Amarnath Cave Temple History & Mythology: The Magical
Story of Lord Shiva’s Ice Lingam
High up in the snowy mountains of Jammu & Kashmir lies a
very special cave, hidden under layers of ice and mystery. This is the Amarnath
Cave Temple, one of the most sacred places for Hindus, where a natural
ice Shiva Lingam forms every year — and melts away after a few weeks.
Sounds magical, right?
Let’s explore the amazing story behind this holy place,
and how Lord Shiva shared the secret of immortality here.
The Legend Begins:
Lord Shiva and Parvati
Long ago, Goddess Parvati asked Lord Shiva why he
wears a mala (necklace) of skulls. Shiva replied, “Every time you take
birth, I add one skull to the necklace.” Hearing this, Parvati wanted to know
the secret of eternal life.
Lord Shiva knew this was not something to be shared easily.
So he decided to go to a secret, quiet place where no one could hear them — not
even the gods.
The Secret Journey
to the Cave
Shiva left behind everything:
- Nandi
the bull at Pahalgam
- The
moon from his hair at Chandanwari
- The
snakes at Sheshnag
- His
son Ganesh at Mahagunas
- And
even his five elements (Panch Tatvas) at Panchtarni
Finally, Lord Shiva and Parvati reached a quiet cave
in the mountains — now known as the Amarnath Cave.
The Secret of Immortality (Amar Katha)
Inside the cave, Lord Shiva began telling Parvati the Amar
Katha — the secret of how to live forever. But something surprising
happened.
A pair of pigeons hidden in the cave heard the story
too. It is believed that they became immortal after listening to the
full katha. Even today, many pilgrims say they see a pair of pigeons flying
near the cave — even in the freezing cold.
The Ice Shivling Miracle
Now comes the most amazing part. Inside the Amarnath cave, a
natural ice Shivling forms every year during the Shravan month
(July–August). It grows and shrinks with the phases of the moon.
People believe this Shivling is Lord Shiva himself
appearing to bless his devotees.
Why Do So Many People Go There?
Every year, lakhs of pilgrims trek through snow-covered
mountains just to get darshan of the ice Shivling. The journey is tough
but full of devotion. Many people walk for days, while some take ponies or
helicopters. The feeling of standing inside the cave, after so much effort, is
something truly special.
What Can We Learn?
The story of Amarnath is not just about gods and caves. It
teaches us:
- The
value of trust and love (between Shiva and Parvati)
- The
importance of sharing knowledge wisely
- That faith
can take you far—even up to the Himalayas!
- Carry
warm clothes and walking shoes
- Respect
the mountains and nature
- Keep
the place clean and plastic-free
- Most
importantly—enjoy the spiritual journey
The Amarnath Cave Temple is not just a place. It’s a magical
story, a test of faith, and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Whether you

something every Indian teen should know and cherish.
